Not What You'd Expect

Conventional wisdom and expected outcomes are the core ingredients of predictable organizations and societies. Contrarian beliefs and surprise outcomes, however, are the stuff of great leaps of progress and revolutions. In this sermon Fr. Garrett illuminates the unifying contrarian theme in the interplay between two scriptural narratives (Numbers 21:4-9 and John 3:14-21). The wisdom of God, as conveyed in the Old and New Testaments, often challenges our assumptions and expectations. There's great potential for growth in this wisdom and transcendence beyond the ways of the world that pit people against one another and result in scarcity for many while concentrating wealth and power in the hands of the few.
