Wasteful and Reckless

Wasteful and reckless - these are bad things. Everyone wants to be more efficient, whether it's in energy usage, business practices, or just in the ways we spend our own personal time. Big data and analytics are increasingly being brought into the decision making processes of individuals, promising to steer us toward optimized purchases and services. But what happens when we allow this analytical worldview to supersede the inefficiencies of personal relationships and connection, to foreclose our openness to non-five-star-reviewed human interactions and first chances (to say nothing of second chances!)? In this sermon Fr. Garrett expounds upon a parable (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23) that depicts God's willingness - even eagerness - to devote attention and care to us as wasteful and reckless! Let's be grateful that God doesn't evaluate the merits of spending time on us on the basis of some meta analytical model in the heavens of spiritual or moral worthiness, but has instead adopted the attitude of unconditional love. Does your allocation of time and attention have room for the same?
