Shelter from the Blast

In the mid-1950s many American families undertook the project of building their own nuclear fallout shelters. The U.S. government sought to give people a hands-on protective task during a time of heightened national insecurity. In this week’s Gospel reading (Luke 21:5-19) Jesus speaks about ominous future threats two millennia before the Cold War. Fr. Garrett calls us to take stock of the condition of the shelters of our own relationships with God. God offers us protection from the assaults of life, but it doesn’t come prefabricated and delivered via free two-day shipping. We need to use the tools of faith on offer to build a strong structure that will hold up when we need it most.
